Sex always on your mind? You could be hypersexual!

Do you watch porn or indulge in sexual activities frequently? You might reach a point where you'd probably ask yourself, "Am I an addict or do I have a sexual disorder?" There is a thin line between hypersexuality and sex addiction. Indulging in frequent sexual activities or watching too much porn cannot necessarily be called a hypersexual disorder. Sexual health expert, Dr Vijaysarathi Ramanathan says, "Some people get conditioned to certain sexual behaviours, and they have to engage in that particular sexual act. Be it watching excessive porn, masturbating or engaging in highly risky sexual acts like unprotected sex. Also, masturbating on a daily basis has no health consequences and doing so should not be mistaken for a hypersexual disorder". Like every other disorder, this too, has symptoms that you must look out for. Signs to watch out for
  • You get restless and irritated without performing certain sexual acts.
  • You spend so much time engaged in your sexual fantasies and acts that it affects you day-to-day responsibilities.
  • You are frequently absent at professional or academic level.
  • You are emotionally detached from all your sexual partners.
  • You spend very less time with your family.
What next? The moment you realise that your sexual habits are affecting your relationships, it's time you seek professional help. We understand that it's easier said than done. A person has one hundred things going on in his mind before deciding to see a specialist. Fear of judgement, confidentiality, shame, legal consequences, financial constraints and so on. Find the right person with whom you can share your problems. While some people go through behavioural changes and enrol in rehabilitation centres, some choose to take medicines for the same. Could women addicted to porn turn out to be hypersexuals? Why should you seek help? Out-of-control sexual behaviours affect your daily routine, your relationships, professional life and much more without you realising it.
  • You perform poorly at work/academics.
  • You have unresolvable conflicts in your relationships.
  • You have a high chance of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
  • You lose your self-esteem and self-respect.
  • You remain isolated from the society that affects your social life gravely.
  • You also face a financial crisis if you're spending a fortune on sex workers.
If you know someone who suffers from this disorder or if you are suffering from this, do not be ashamed to seek professional help. It will improve your life. Image source: Shutterstock
